Window screens
Torn or missing window screens, remade to fit
Screens are small work, and still worth doing well: mesh pulled even, spline seated all the way round, the frame square so it sits snug. A torn screen usually just needs new mesh in its own frame; a bent or missing one is made to size. Summers here are long and humid, so it's worth sorting before the windows open. We connect you with an independent local pro who handles screens for homes; send sizes or photos and they'll quote.
- Rescreened or made to size
- Casement screens measured from inside
- Pet and fine insect mesh

Three options
Rescreen, repair the frame or start fresh
Which one you need depends on the frame, not the mesh.
Rescreen
New mesh and spline in the existing frame, for tears and sags when the frame is straight and the corners tight.
Repair the frame
A cracked corner, a missing pull tab or lost clips are replaced, and a slightly bowed frame can be trued.
Make a new screen
For bent or missing screens, or a window that never had one, built to your measurements.
Measuring
Casement and awning screens sit inside: measuring them
Casement and awning sashes crank outward, so their screens live indoors, pinned in by clips or spring tabs. Easy to take down, and easy to misplace.
Measure the screen if you have it
Width, then height, across the outside edges of the frame, to the nearest sixteenth of an inch.
Measure the opening if it's missing
Measure where the screen seats, at top, middle and bottom, and give the smallest width and height as opening sizes.
Photograph the clips
A close-up of whatever holds the screen tells the pro which fasteners to supply.
Mesh
Mesh choices: standard, pet-resistant, finer insect mesh
Standard fibreglass mesh
Flexible, easy to see through and it doesn't dent. Charcoal is the least visible from inside.
Pet-resistant mesh
Thicker coated strands that resist claws and paws; the view through it is slightly dimmer.
Finer insect mesh
A tighter weave for tiny biting insects, useful on bedroom windows left open at night.
Timing
Getting screens done before summer
Spring is the easy time to send sizes, before every window opens at once. Put all the screens that need work into one request.
If you're replacing casement windows anyway, the new windows come with new screens, so skip rescreening the old ones. For cranks and hinges on the windows themselves, see window repair.
Behind the price
What a screen job depends on
- How many screens, and rescreens or new frames
- Size, including tall casements and porch panels
- Mesh: standard, pet-resistant or fine insect
- Frame colour and any hardware to replace
- Pickup and drop-off, or work at the house
A list of sizes, or photos with a tape measure across the frame, is enough for a first quote.
Porches
Porch and patio screens
Porch screening means larger panels framed between the posts, or mesh fastened to the framing under trim. Cornell was planned with street-facing porches and rear-lane garages, so there the porch screen is often the most visible one on the house, worth matching to the trim. For sliding or garden door screens, see screen door repair.
